We feel here at Vournas it’s not all about dollars and cents we focus on our love of quality coffee. This passion translates to a responsibility that we feel to our farmers. This includes millions of people who work hard every day to get us what we call truly special coffees. We have been at the forefront on worker issues with many farms paying higher wages improved housing and medical assistance as well as meals. This translates to better pay which in turn enables workers to send their kids to school which is on a pay basis in most coffee countries. We continue to reward farmers that use safe environmental practices which include cleaning of the water after processing with waste pools as well as keeping as much of the shade trees intact and using less chemicals when possible. This promotes better pollination with birds and insects making homes between and above the trees. We have always believed that every chain in coffee should be of Herculean strength. VCT has funded the building of schools, school supplies, soccer balls, desks as well as building of water wells. We also have implemented an increased differential program as a way to reward farmers who produce great quality coffee. This program includes a VCT training office in Honduras which teaches farmers about cupping and quality control at the farm level. VCT has been dealing with the same farmers for over 26 years and we are now on our third generation of farmers with these long standing relationships we also provide several with before the harvest loans, this enables the grower to hire pickers and get ready for the harvest. The loan is then paid back to us upon VCT receiving coffee. Great coffee, great cause!
